Alexandre and Eularia newest prince and princess of Insulae Draconis - Vivant!

In a clean and decisive victory, Master Alexandre d'Avigne, fighting for Mistress Eularia Trewe, won the Insulae Draconis coronet tourney over Lord Johannes of Uffingdon, fighting for Viscountess Susannah of York. The tourney took place on Saturday 8 August AS 50 in the shire of Mynydd Gwyn (mka Wales and borders) on the beautiful grounds of Raglan Castle.

Precious manuscripts threatened by jihadists in Iraq

The fighting in Iraq continues to threaten, not just the populace, but historical treasures and manuscripts. Recently a Dominican Order of priests, known as the Order of Preachers, managed to rescue a number of these precious documents when Islamic State jihadists advanced into the region. (photos)

Doctoral thesis changes history of Swedish glass

Archaeologist Anna Ihr's doctoral dissertation, Becoming Vitrified, shows that the glass industry in Sweden is much older than previously believed, as early as the 13th century. The thesis describes how different vitrified, or glassy, materials can be interpreted and analysed.

Mongol warship found near Japanese island

Twice in seven years, 1274 and 1281, the Mongol Emperor Kublai Khan tried to invade Japan. On one of those missions a ship sank in a typhoon off the island of Takashima. Now arhaeologists hope to learn the secrets of the Mongol warship from the recently-discovered wreck.

Witches at the British Museum

The British Museum has been invaded by witches - at least until January 2015. A new free exhibit, Witches and Wicked Bodies, will look at the history of witches in Great Britain from the 1400s until the Victorian era, and will include artists' renditions, objects of sorcery and magic, as well as artifacts from antiquity depicting famous witches.

Rebuilding the Temple of Mithras

In 1954, there was much debate over what to do with the recently discovered remains of a Temple of Mithras. Unable to reach a conclusion, the ruins were packed up and have led a nomadic existance ever since. Now the ruins are being returned to their original site, underneath a London office block.

Liao Dynasty nomadic campsite found in China

A team of archaeologists has discovered the remains of an ancient campsite for nomadic emperors from the Liao Dynasty (907-1125) in north-east China's Jilin province. One of four seasonal camps, the site is believed to have been an administrative centre during the reign of the nomadic Khitans.
