Bonjour! Nous sommes en Paris, en 1405 Anno Domini*……
The Ruling House of France, the House of Valois, is still smarting from the effects of their sound defeat by the English at Crecy in 1346, and at Poitiers in 1356, where the king was captured but not ransomed for some time. The current King and Queen of France, Charles VI and Isabeau, reign from palaces in Rouen and Paris, well attended by their children most notably the Dauphin, Louis, duc de Guyenne. The Great Schism has been in effect for 25 years, leaving Popes at both Rome and Avignon. Innocent VII has just been elected to the nearest Papal seat in Avignon, and he is attempting to heal the Schism to little effect. The Crusades are still an idea to be toyed with every few years, but no concerted effort to retake the Holy Land has been mounted in some time. The world is turning colder in the wake of the Black Death 50 years ago, leaving France's population nearly
decimated, but this devastation has left the both the middle classes and the aristocracy with genuine opportunities for advancement. Bienvenue a Paris!**
