Spain Opens First Mosque in 511 Years

Dignitaries from Arab and Muslim countries were present for the opening of the new Great Mosque of Granada, the first mosque built in Spain since King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella expelled the Muslims in 1492. AP reports that the Great Mosque of Granada is the first purpose-built mosque since the last Moorish king, Boabdil, rode into exile 511 years ago. Granada presently has a Muslim population of about 15,000 (with a total of 500,000 throughout Spain), but until now it was served only by makeshift mosques in apartments, garages, and storefronts.
