16th century coin may prove early western discovery of Australia

A silver coin dated 1597 has been found on North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia, possibly predating Captain Cook's discovery of the continent.

If authentic, the coin may prove that either Spanish or Portuguese explorers discovered Australia long before Cook. Archaeologists hope that the coin may lead them to the legendary wreck of a Spanish ship beneath Eighteen Mile Swamp on North Stradbroke Island. The skeleton of a ship has been reported throughout history as well as in local tribal tradition.
