Archaeologists hope that the coin may lead them to the legendary wreck of a Spanish ship beneath Eighteen Mile Swamp on North Stradbroke Island. The skeleton of a ship has been reported throughout history as well as in local tribal tradition.

A silver coin dated 1597 has been found on North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia, possibly predating Captain Cook's discovery of the continent.
