Myths about volunteering at Estrella

Duchess Katerina O'Callaghan, SCA Internal Media/Website Content Coordinator, debunks myths about what it takes to volunteer at Estrella War.

Attending Estrella War XXIV (Feb 12 - 18, 2008) at Canyon Moon Ranch in Florence, AZ, and considering volunteering while at the event? Then read on.

MYTH#1: I have to be a paid member to volunteer. False with some exceptions! 95% of all volunteering duties do not require that you be a paid member to participate. There are areas that require the volunteer to have a current warrant (primarily anything to do with money, children or providing first aid).

MYTH #2: You are not allowed to volunteer your first war. False! We recommend you do not overdo anything on your first war. But spending two to four hours volunteering will give you the chance to experience more of the war and will move you from spectator to participant.

MYTH #3: You need special training, you need to attend the pre-war meetings, you need to know someone on staff, and they ONLY want young people. False with some exceptions! 95% of all volunteering duties do not require any prior knowledge or training, and many volunteer jobs are not strenuous. The fascinating thing about volunteering is the diversity of positions. There is a job for everyone, including people who have limited mobility. All you have to do is show up at either the site where you would like to work, or at Volunteer point.

MYTH #4: There are people paid to work the war, so they do not need me. False! False! False! Estrella War is fully staffed by volunteers. NO ONE you see working at the event is paid any money. The War Staff spend an average of 50 hours working before the event starts (that number triples or more for some staff positions). By the time the front gate opens for the public, many of the war staff have already worked 72+ hours on-site. Need you? You are not only needed, you provide welcome help! The Estrella War only happens because volunteers like you make it happen.

MYTH #5: I have to volunteer the whole war. False. One, you do not have to volunteer at all to attend Estrella War. Two, we ask only that you volunteer for 2 hours during the event. If every attendee at Estrella War volunteered to share the work for only 2 hours, everyone at the event could truly participate in all the event has to offer.

Everyone is welcome to volunteer at Estrella War, and everyone is needed. To sign up to volunteer, or to sign up a family or group of your friends to volunteer together, email the Volunteer Coordinators (THL Eden Blacksmith and her deputy, Mistress Meadhbh Dhubhthaigh) at volunteer08@ [OMIT SPACES], or see the volunteering page of the Estrella War website (
