Winchester Residents Campaign to "Save Our King"

This is Hampshire: Residents of the city of Winchester are up in arms about plans to strike King Alfred from the city's logo. The city council of Winchester England feels that King Alfred is too old-fashioned for the modern attractions of the city. Many residents disagree and want to keep their beloved king on the city's logo.

King Alfred ruled over the Kingdom of Wessex during Anglo-Saxon times and defeated the Vikings. His contribution to British history is celebrated throughout the country and especially in Wessex. Eleanor Miles, manager at The King Alfred Pub, says "We have had people stay specifically at the pub who have come all the way from the USA because of the history of Winchester and King Alfred."

The local newspaper, the Daily Echo has launched a campaign urging readers to write in support of King Alfred. Time will tell if it is enough to save the king's head.
