Part of a Latin inscription, "Signum Roberti Horologiarii" ("The seal of Robert the Clockmaker") was found on it, though the rest of the inscription is as yet unreadable. Records show the first clocks were unveiled in English churches during this time period, but none prior to this find in the York area.

Researchers in York have discovered a small copper-alloy disc dating back to around 1300 that was part of an early mechanical clock.
