Author believes Portuguese discovered Australia

Beyond Capricorn, a new book by Australian author Peter Trickett, theorizes that the Portuguese, rather than the Dutch or British, are responsible for the discovery of Australia. The theory is based largely on a 16th century maritime map.

According to Trickett, Portuguese explorer Christopher de Mendonca captained a small fleet into Botany Bay in 1522, over 200 years earlier than Captain Cook. The map on which the author bases his research was found in the vault of a Los Angeles library.
