The Orange Battles highlight Storico Carnevale di Ivrea

Each winter during Carnival Season, hundreds gather in the town square of Ivrea, Italy to watch teams of merry-makers pelt each other with oranges. This carnage is part of the Storico Carnevale di Ivrea.

The legend says that in the Middle Ages the feudal lord of Ivrea "gave a pot of beans to the poor families who, out of disrespect, threw them into the streets." In later centuries, this act was re-created with oranges, leading to the town's famous Battle of the Oranges where "teams in carriages (symbolising the tyrant’s guards) battle against the orange thrower teams on foot (the rebellious commoners) which consist of hundreds of throwers."
