Pink city of Petra hopes to become 7th Wonder

Jordanians are hoping that their prized ancient city of Petra will be chosen as one of the 7 Wonders of the World on July 7, 2007. Rediscovered in the 19th century, the city, built by the Nabateans, was last inhabited in the 8th century CE.

Built from stunning red sandstone, the tourist destination includes a 4,000-seat auditorium, the treasurer's house, carved from the native rock, tombs and places of worship.

Petra has been included in a short list of 21 sites which include Stonehenge and Machu Picchu.
