Lindisfarne Gospels to Return to the Holy Island

After 1300 years, the Lindisfarne Gospels will return to the Holy Island.
A long campaign to return the Lindisfarne Gospels to their Holy Island of
origin has failed. The lavishly decorated text commissioned by Bishop Eadfrith
in the 8th century, will remain in the British Library where it has been held
for centuries. In a sense, however, the campaign will have been successful when
a high-tech laser copy of the Gospels arrives at the Island's Community
Heritage Centre. Another copy will reside at Durham Cathedral.
