The paintings were originally part of a collection of saints' portraits commissioned in 1438 by Cosimo Medici. They were purchased in California in the 1960s by the father of librarian and specialist in medieval literature Jean Preston for US$381. Preston displayed the works on her wall, not realizing that they were original Fra Angelico works. Upon her death, the paintings became the property of her nephew who will offer them for auction.

Several paintings of saints created by 15th century monk and artist Fra Angelico have been discovered in England and are scheduled to be auctioned. The sale is expected to bring nearly US$2 million.
