Lost Castle Buildings Discovered by Freelance Archaeologist
Submitted by Milica on Thu, 2003-05-08 01:02
A survey of the grounds of Glyndwr Castle in Wales may reveal lost buildings
named in the writings of court poet Iolo Goch.
Spencer Smith, a freelance archaeologist, may have discovered the foundations of
a lost part of Glyndwr Castle, the estate of the last Welsh-born Prince of
Wales, Owain Glyndwr. The castle was burnt to the ground in 1403 by King Henry V.
Smith researched the castle before beginning his survey and was particularly
interested in the description of the castle in poems by Owain Glyndwr's court
poet, Iolo Goch. Smith hopes to attract funding to begin excavation of the site,
which should reveal an 11th century motte and bailey castle.
