Today in the Middle Ages: October 1, 1478

On October 1, 1478, plague returned to the city of Florence.

This was one of many smaller outbreaks of plague in the centuries following the Black Death. While plague was occasionally found in Europe well into the 19th century, the Great Plague of London in 1665-1666 is considered the last major outbreak there. The plague-causing organism, Yersinia pestis, survives in North America today, as well as in Asia and the Indian subcontinent.
