Campaign to Save Stern of Newport Ship Fails

Those who have been following the fate of the Newport Ship will be sad to learn that efforts to save the stern have failed. Despite an international campaign to continue archaeological excavation of a medieval ship in Newport, Wales, the Council has given their approval to pour concrete over the stern of the ship allowing the remaining timbers to rot. The bow of the ship will continue to be excavated, but the stern has been exposed to air, allowing the timbers to begin to detereorate. Friends of the Newport Ship, a group that has tried to save the entire ship, is deeply disappointed, saying that clues to the shape of the ship will now be lost forever.

The construction of the Arts Center led to the discovery of the ship. Those parts already excavated will be displayed in the Center.
