Despite having opposed King Cnut, Leofric succeeded Cnut's choice as Earl of Mercia. Although legend says his wife Godgifu (Godiva in the Latinized version) made her naked ride as a protest against Leofric's high taxes, both the Earl and his lady are known to have been generous to religious establishments.
