Today in the Middle Ages: July 13, 1527

John Dee, scholar, mystic, and astrologer to Queen Elizabeth I, was born on July 13, 1527.

Dee's reputation has fluctuated over the centuries. He is now recognized as one of the most learned man of his day. He was a Christian, but deeply influenced by Pythagorean and Hermetic philosophies. Although he did practice alchemy, his contemporary reputation as an "evil magician" appears undeserved.

Dee was deeply interested in both magic and science in a time when the distinction between them was not yet as stark as it is today.
