Today in the Middle Ages: June 29, 1613

The original Globe Theatre was destroyed by fire on June 29, 1613.

As part of a performance of Henry VIII, a cannon was set off. It ignited the theatre's thatched roof and the building burned to the ground. It was immediately rebuilt with a tile roof and reopened the following year.

In the 1990s, archaeologists identified the foundations of the Globe, and the third theatre of that name opened in London in 1997.
