Today in the Middle Ages: June 26, 1559

On June 26, 1559, the Parliament of Paris outlawed the practice of dueling.

The ban had little or no effect. Codes duello, rules of etiquette for dueling, continued to be developed from the 16th to the 18th century, and duels were fought in both Europe and North America until late in the 19th century. There is even a record of a duel between two Russian poets in 1909.
