Oldest Fragment of Nibelungen Myth Found in Austria

Fragments of parchment found in the Zwettl monastery in Austria are reported to be the oldest version yet discovered of the epic Nibelungen myth. Scraps of parchment containing part of the oldest version of the Nibelungen saga yet known have been discovered in a monastery in Lower Austria. Unlike the three later versions from the 12th century, this version is written in prose rather than verse. The saga tells of the exploits of the hero Siegfried and is considered to be the most important text written in Middle High German.
