Discovery News: A cache of swords, reported to be the oldest yet discovered, has been found in
southeast Anatolia, Turkey.
Nine swords dating as far back as 3300 B.C.E. have been discovered in a palace
complex in southeast Turkey. Anthropology professor Marcella Frangipane reports
that the swords were made with the hilt and blade in one piece and were inlaid
with silver. They, along with spear points and lances, were found in a large
complex with connected buildings and decorated walls. Mass-produced bowls were
also found in the storerooms of the complex. "I believe this is the best work
known being done on an early state administrative center in southwest Asia,"
Frangipane said.
