Latin Lives -- in Germany

Latin is growing ever more popular among German secondary students, outstripping both Italian and Spanish. Only English and French currently attract more learners.

Students appear to value the dead language for its rich cultural associations. Hartmut Loos of the German Philology Association theorizes that Latin study has been strengthened by European unification. He claims the literature of the classical tongue helps Germans understand the roots they have in common with other European nations.
