Today in the Middle Ages: April 25, c. 451

April 25 is both the traditional date for the founding of Venice and the holy day of St. Mark, the city's patron saint. However, the year of the founding is in dispute; either 451 or 452 CE are the most common dates given.

The Huns inspired the founding of the city. When they invaded the northern Italian mainland, some refugees fled to the lagoon. They built the city there so it would be easily defensible. The Huns left, but Venice remains.
