Woman Is Treated for the Plague

The Los Angeles Times reports that an area woman is being treated for bubonic plague, which she may have caught from fleas around her neighborhood.

The county's director of public health is quoted as saying that while plague is rare in modern times, "it is important to remember that this can still happen." Los Angeles was the site of the last major urban epidemic of the bubonic plague in the United States, resulting in dozens of deaths in 1924.
