Stairway, Sphinx Found at Hadrian's Villa

A monumental staircase and marble statue of a sphinx have been discovered in the Gymnasium area of Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli, north of Rome. The statue is believed to have originated in Egypt.

The vast site has turned out to become a treasure trove for archaeologists, who have just begun to explore its secrets. Built in the 2nd century, it is considered to be "the largest and richest Imperial Roman villa ever built."
