Chinese Claim to New World Discovery Met with Skepticism

Chinese lawyer Liu Gang recently revealed a map he claims proves China's claims to the discovery of America, but the announcement met with a cool reception from Chinese scholars.

Liu Gang's world map, dating from 1763, shows all the major continents in detail and also bears an inscription claiming to be a reproduction of another map drawn in 1418. If the map is genuine, it would predate western maps by over a century.

Gong Yingyan, a historian at Zhejiang University disagrees. He feels that the map is too full of anachronisms to date from the 15th century.
