We're officially done.
Yes, a few of you may still have some goods to move. But as far as the large-scale efforts to get relief supplies to the Gulf Coast via relay drivers, the Gleann Abhann Supply Run is over as of this weekend.
I will leave the Yahoo Group up until the end of the calendar year, in case anyone wants to trade info on items they have left and find out who wants 'em. However, after that I'm going to shut it down and that will mean the end of all the files, etc., located here. If there's something you want from the site, you'd better get it before Dec. 31, 2005.
If you still have stuff in your possession, here again is the mandate I issued a few weeks back: Food and mundane clothing should be donated to a reputable charity in your area. Same with most household goods (bedding, toiletries, etc.). If you have cleaning supplies, those are likely still needed, especially in Axemoor, and I encourage you to contact that barony and find a way to get the goods to them. If you have SCA-specific goods, contact Lady Ancyra (firstname.lastname@example.org), who despite having had tons of goods pass through her household during this effort has offered to be a clearinghouse for SCA items. If you have anything that doesn't fall into those categories, feel free to contact me via this list or email@example.com and I'll help you figure out what to do with it.
Now the important part: We are, under no circumstances, accepting any donations except gift cards. If someone offers you something other than a gift card, politely decline. (If it's cash, though, direct them to Duchess Lethrenn and her Medieval Disaster Relief account, firstname.lastname@example.org.) If they bring donations to an event, politely tell them to take them home when they leave. Do not bring donations to an event yourself, unless you have arranged ahead of time to hand them over to a specific person who needs them. Do not drop things off at an event thinking someone will take care of them; they won't. Do not try to give them to the autocrat, the chatelaine, the seneshcal or, heaven forfend, me. We will all smile graciouisly and thank you and offer to help put it back into your vehicle. From now on, anyone who wants to make a donation of goods is responsible for arranging deliver and receipt themselves.
But if you're feeling generous, or run into someone who's feeling generous, gift cards are the way to go. Wal-Mart, Sears, Lowe's, Home Depot all are good (remember, right now rebuilding, not replacing personal items, is the priority). Those can be sent to me (e-mail me for the address if you don't still have it) or try contacting the seneschal of the affected group directly.
It's worth repeating that I am humbled by the remarkable response this effort generated, not merely in Gleann Abhann and Meridies, but around the Known World. We received responses and aid from (and I hope I don't forget one): Ansteorra, Trimaris, Calontir, Midrealm, East, West, AEthelmearc, An Tir, Ealdormere, Northshield, Caid, Atlantia, and Artemesia. If I missed anyone, forgive me (and let me know so I can thank you!).
I want to especially single out the response that came from the populace of Meridies and Gleann Abhann, who responded immediately and with incredible generosity to the distress of their kith and kin; as well as the folk of Ansteorra, Trimaris and Calontir, who also rendered a stunning amount of aid to their neighbors. To all of you: Vivat!
Many of you who assisted in the Supply Run I knew already; many of you I have come to know well via this forum and hope to know in person someday soon; many of you will remain ether-mail acquaintances due to the distances that separate us. But I am indebted to each and every gentle who raised their hand when the call for volunteers went out; my life is the richer for having worked with you on this noble effort.
May we never have to do this again; but if we do, may the person in charge be as lucky as I was in the finding of assistance.
In service to Crown, Kingdom and Society, I remain
Peregrine Fairchylde, Coordinator (ret.)
