Mona Lisa Mostly Happy

A team of Dutch scientists has determined that the expression of the face of Da Vinci's famous Mona Lisa is "83 percent happy, 9 percent disgusted."

In an experiment to test new "emotion recognition" software, the researchers scanned the painting to detect hints of what the model was thinking.

"Basically, it's like casting a spider web over the face to break it down into tiny segments," said Harro Stokman, a professor at the University of Amsterdam. "Then you look for minute differences in the flare of the nostril or depth of the wrinkles around the eyes."
