First Nativity Scene to be Restored

A 13th century marble nativity scene by sculptor Arnolfo di Cambio in the oratory of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome is scheduled to be removed from the church for restoration.

Normally availble for public viewing only on Christmas Eve, the work of art will moved to the basilica's public museum to begin a £2 million cleaning and restoration. During the Middle Ages, the nativity scene was a popular stop for pilgrims on Christmas Eve.
