Vatican Swiss Guard Mark 500th Anniversary

Veterans of the famous Swiss Guard, who serve as guards for the Pope, are set to celebrate 500 years of service this summer with a public ceremony to swear in the latest group of recruits.

The Swiss Guard was originally a small group of mercenaries hired by Pope Julius II in 1506 to serve as his private palace guard. The distinctive 16th century uniform of the guards makes them a favorite photo op for tourists visiting Rome.
