The work, created in Florence between 1595 and 1596 at the workshop of Guasparri Papini, became the property of Alessandro Ottavaniano de' Medic, later Pope Leo XI.
When acquired by the museum, the tapestry was very dirty. It was carefully washed and the backing removed before the real restoration work began to return it to its original glory. The museum plans to eventually exhibit the piece when restoration is complete.
