Market Day at Birka XVII

The Barony of Stonemarche invites you to the XVII annual Market Day at Birka. It will be held this year on January 27-28, 2006 at the Center of New Hampshire in Manchester, NH.

New this year, the event will be open for shopping on Friday evening in addition to our usual Saturday schedule of events. Also Sunday morning there will be a breakfast buffet. At this point we have two activities planned for Friday evening.

First, we are offering merchants the opportunity to open for business on the expo center side of the event on Friday evening. Note to Merchants,: opening on Friday is not required. Detailed information for merchants regarding this will be available on our web site (http://www.birka.org/merchants ). The event will be open from 7-10 PM on Friday evening for check in and shopping.

Second an evening pre-revel, in garb, will take place in the set of rooms next to the expo center. The hotel will be providing a cash bar for the pre-revel. This will be a fun , informal way to start off the event. Come, make of it what you will! Make music, dance and play games, have fun. This will run from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM on Friday.

In addition to the Friday evening activities we will be adding one activity on Sunday morning, a breakfast buffet. The buffet will run from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM and the cost will be $14 for adults and $11.50 for children 12 and under. This buffet will be by pre-registration only.

On Saturday we will have our usual slate of activities. There will be indoor fighting, fencing, and youth combat tournaments. More details will follow in future announcements. but expect them to be generally similar to the last few years.

Merchants, of course, are an important part of our event and we welcome you. You must pre-reserve to merchant. All information will be published on our website: http://www.birka.org and via e-mail. If you wish to be considered, please visit the site and sign up for the email list available there (http://www.birka.org/merchants/email-signup.htm ). An announcement will be posted there when the information on the website is updated. If you have no internet access special arrangements can be made with the merchant autocrat by contacting her: Mistress A'isha bint Jamil (Kathryn Smith) aishabintjamil@yahoo.com

Other activates will include a medieval fashion show, children's activates, bardic entertainment on an ad-hoc basis, Nordic themed A&S display/workshop and an evening Ball. Late in the afternoon there will be a short court of the Excellencies, Xavier and Maria of Stonemarche. A royal court of their Majesties Darius and Roxane will follow thereafter. More details will be forthcoming in future updates to this announcement. Feel free to contact the autocrat, Lord Ian Gunn, at iangunn@comcast.net.

The site is offering a reduced room rate for event attendees. Reduced rates start at $94 for single occupancy. Reservations must be made with the hotel prior to 1/6/06. Contact the Radission Directly at 603-625-1000 and mention the Society for Creative Anachronism to receive the reduced rate.

An event of this size requires a great deal of work, so any gentles interested in helping are encouraged to contact the autocrat in advance or refer to the event web site for additional information. We're in special need of volunteers to work gate and security. Thanks in advance for any offers for help.

Please note that there is no day-board included with the site fee. The hotel will be running several concession stands on site and water will be available in several locations around the site, most notably in the ballroom where the Heavy list combat will take place. There is also one restaurant on site and a fair number within walking distance. Please plan accordingly.
