Russian archaeologist Dmitry Osipov is an expert on medieval footwear. Recently, he has begun a study of shoes used for burial of the dead.

Funeral dress was a vital part of the ritual, and shoes were of particular importance since some early Russians believed the soul dwelt in the foot.
