James Doohan dies at age 85

If they had had transporter beams and warp drives in the Middle Ages, they would have used them. And James Doohan would have been the Scotsman who squeezed 'em for every last drop of performance and then some. The man they called "Scotty" has left us today.

The beloved Chief Engineer, Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, from the 1960s TV series Star Trek is dead at the age of 85, a victim of Alzheimer's Disease. Thousands of SCAdians who also enjoy science fiction and fantasy will sorely miss Mr. Doohan's warmth and gentle humor.

James Doohan was a personal hero

James Doohan was a personal hero of mine, when I was growing up in the 1960s. The character of "Scotty" was one of the inspirations that caused me to become an engineer in real life (though, sadly, I don't get to fly on a starship -- yet).

Farewell and godspeed, Jimmy.
