Elves Halt Construction in Iceland

Efforts to remove several large rocks from a construction site in Kopavogur, Iceland, have led to strange happenings, leading residents to believe that the elves who live in the rocks don't want their homes destroyed.

Since the 1970s, a section of Elf Hill Road has remained one lane because efforts to remove large rocks led to the breakdown of construction equipment. The Viking descendents of the town are content to live with their elven neighbors.

"My next-door neighbor is an elf woman," explained retired museum director Hildur Hakonardottir. "She lives in a cliff in a rock in my garden."
