The city council for the area has insisted that a full-scale archaeological excavation will take place before the ambitious development can take place. Researchers hope to find evidence of the campsite of Edward Longshanks and his army of 25,000 men from 1298, the campaign which saw the defeat of William Wallace at Falkirk.

Kirkliston, site of the famous Kirkliston Distillery, was also the location of the camp of Edward I on the eve of the Battle of Falkirk. A new archaeological excavation there may stall plans to build a housing development.
