Unicorn Tapestries Restoration Creates Mystery

Richard Preston of the New Yorker discusses the how two mathematicians aided in the restoration of the Cloisters' famous Unicorn Tapestries and in the process, discovered a mystery.

The article chroniclers the painstaking task of removing the backing from the tapestries and studying - and photographing - both sides of the textile masterpieces, but also the involvement of the Chudnovsky brothers, a pair of Russian-born, senior research scientists at Columbia University who discovered, while digitizing the photographs, that the pieces just didn't line up.
