Tolkien Editor Aids in Learning Old English

English professor Michael Drout has provided a course in Old English, including "King Alfred's Grammar Book," and "King Alfred," an Old English translation program, which allow users to learn the language and discover its beauty. Professor Michael Drout is the editor of a previously unpublished manuscript by J.R.R. Tolkien on Beowulf called "Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics." Information on where to order this book is available on his website.

Also available are tools for learning Old English including King Alfred, an Old English translation program and King Alfred's Grammar Book which teaches the language. Professor Drout believes "that by helping the student to focus on problem areas and to spend more time learning things that aren't already known (instead of repeating already mastered material) that the process of learning Old English will be stripped of much of its drudgery. Students will then be free to pay more attention to the beauty and power of this oldest form of the language we speak today and to learn those things (to steal King Alfred's words) that are most necessary for people to know."
