Phallus tree in mural revealed as political propaganda

A mural in the Italian town of Massa Marittima, dating to the 13th century CE, was thought to be a fertility symbol but is now believed to be a work of political propaganda. (PG-13)

The tree in the mural looks innocent enough at first glance, but closer examination reveals it to be covered with more than two dozen hanging penises, complete with testicles. Researchers now believe that the mural was created by a Tuscan family as a political propaganda tool to "sully the reputation" of another family.
