His Grace was a former Principal Herald of the East Kingdom, and one of the best court heralds our realm has ever known.
His Grace was one of the great legends of the SCA; he will be missed by all. Please keep him in your prayers.

Master Aaron faheud Swiftrunner, who knew His Grace for many years, said, "he was a grand fellow". Aaron wrote a song in honor of His Grace's life and legacy, and has kindly given SCAtoday.net permission to share it with you.
Legacy
For His Grace Gyrth Oldcastle, by faheud
Had a call on the phone today.
Heart stopped cold when I heard her say
His Grace is gone.
Night seems long.
I met His Grace at Pennsic nine
Smile on his face all the time,
from dawn to dawn.
And his tale lives on
When you need a favor it’s never a hassle
Place at table or in the castle
It is always there.
He’s a man to share.
He once said that every dawn
He thanked his God for Melisande
It was a god send—to marry his best friend.
And he’d do it again.
Night is dark and the road is quiet,
They say he’s left, but I just can’t buy it.
You know in some ways,
You can see him every day.
When you step on out to the tourney field
With a lady’s favor and a brand new shield
It’s a legacy left for us to see.
Always the best that he could be
When you need a favor it’s never a hassle
Place at table or in the castle
It is always there.
He’s a man to share.
He once said that was no doubt
His son Michael made him proud
And it was a great thing, better than bein’ king
Giving her that shiny ring
Saw him last in his Pennsic camp
Inviting us in out of the damp
To sit and talk awhile
I can see him smile
We told stories of another day
How she inspired him to better ways
Gyrth was always sure
It was all about her
When you need a favor Gyrth Oldcastle
Would give anything, it was never a hassle
He was always there.
He’s a man to share.
He once said that every dawn
He thanked his God for Melisande
It was a god send—to marry his best friend.
And he’d do it again

I did not know His Grace, and
May His Grace's journey thrive. He travels now in bright company, and we have been blessed for his presence, for even those who did not know him knew of his deeds and his life, a fine example indeed.
