First Cistercian Nunnery in Scotland Excavated

St. Leonard's, the oldest Cistercian nunnery in Scotland, is the site of a new excavation that has delivered on its promise of impressive artifacts.

Located in one of the most important — and contentious — areas of Scotland, the nunnery was destroyed by continuous battles between the English and the Scots. Now archaeologists are reaping a harvest of important artifacts including pottery, writing impliments, a pilgrim's badge, and evidence of the nuns' diet.
