Gold torc found among coin hoard

In 2012, a hoard of nearly 70,000 coins, dating to the first century BCE, was discovered by metal detectorists on the Island of Jersey. Recently, while separating the coins, experts were surprised to find an intact gold torc. (photos)

The gold is believed to have originated in Europe and was minted by the Baiocasses tribe in northern France. The necklace would have been worn by both men and women, according to Julia Farley, curator of European Iron Age collections at the British Museum who said, "They are rare, particularly gold ones, but the number from Britain is fairly small, under 50 or so."
