Early image of Jesus found in Spain

Archaeologists and theologians are excited about the discovery of a 4th century engraved glass plate depicting an unbearded Jesus. The plate, discovered during an excavation near the southern Spanish city of Linares, is believed to be one of the earliest known images of Christ. (photos)

The glass plate is in excellent condition and is believed to have been used to hold Eucharistic bread as it was consecrated in early Christian rituals. "In the image, Jesus Christ is flanked by two apostles, believed to be Peter and Paul. 'The scene takes place in the celestial orb, framed between two palm trees, which in Christian iconography represent immortality, the afterlife and heaven, among other things,' ABC writes."
