Not the Santa Maria

Expectations were high recently when archaeologists believed they had found the wreck of the Santa Maria, Columbus' flagship off the coast of Haiti, but it was not to be. New evidence shows that the remains of the ship are from a later period.

"We are still awaiting the final report, but so far what we have seen...tends to lead us to think it is a later ship," said Culture Minister Monique Rocourt of the wreckage found by Barry Clifford in about 15 feet (3 meters) of water near the northern city of Cap-Haitien. The final report from UNESCO is expected soon.
