Medieval tagging: what it means

"We want to record it before it's lost," said Brian Porter of Lincolnshire's medieval graffiti project about thousands of medieval doodles found on the walls of English churches. Images captured include the "straw king," believed to be a pagan fertility symbol, ships, and signs to protect against the evil eye. "It's a fairly new area of archaeology and it's like discovering a medieval library buried in your back garden," added medieval archaeologist Matt Champion.
