Students live their medieval characters in Rhode Island

Sixth grade teacher Patricia Bastia of Warwick, Rhode Island has a favorite quote from Ben Franklin: "Tell me, I forget. Show me, I’ll remember. Involve me, I’ll understand." This is why Bastia invites members of the SCA each year to involve her students in learning about the Middle Ages. Reporter Ryan D. Murray of the Warwick Beacon spoke with Bastia about the event.

At this year's demo at Sherman Elementary School, members of the Barony of the Bridge took the part of Vikings invading the school. They demonstrated armored combat, arts and sciences and helped the students learn about their pre-selected names and period personas.

“Every student here is their character today, and they're not just dressed as their character, they are their character,” said teaching assistant Amy Harnedy. “They are living their character today.”
