Santa Maria found?

“All the geographical, underwater topography and archaeological evidence strongly suggests that this wreck is Columbus’ famous flagship, the Santa Maria,” said underwater archaeologist Barry Clifford about the discovery of what may be the Santa Maria, Christopher Columbus' flagship off the coast of Haiti.

In his diary, Columbus discussed where the wreck had taken place in relation to his fort, a site which archaeologists believed they have pinpointed. Now Clifford's team will depend on a 2003 survey of the area, photos taken during previous dives and recent reconnaissance of the site to determine if the shipwreck is in fact the Santa Maria.
