Limoges Virgin Mary is "absolutely fantastic"

Archaeologist Hans Mikkelsen from the Danish National Museum was happily surprised recently to discover a Limoges statue of the Virgin Mary under the dirt floor of a small church in Søby, Jutland. The figurine has been dated to the 13th century. (photo)

Conservators feared the statue had been damaged over the centuries, but they were surprised to find it whole and in good condition. “I could see the colours - the red in the halo and the beautiful blue-green nuances in the clothing,” National Museum conservator Signe Nygaard told Jyllands-Posten newspaper. “It is absolutely fantastic.”
