Pre-14th century mikvahs discovered in Portugal

Plumbers fixing a leak in a building in the central Portugal city of Coimbra found something they were not expecting: several 600-year-old mikvahs, Jewish ritual baths.

Experts know that Jews lived in the area at least as far back as 1370, and the newly-discovered baths may date back even further. Archaeologist Jorge Alarcao believes the baths were designed for women. He said, “This could be the only discovery of its kind made in Portugal.”
