Technology uncovers medieval defences and settlements in Poland

New studies using LiDAR (aerial laser scanning), electrofusion and magnetic prospection, soil analysis and other technologies have revealed new perspectives on six medieval sites in Poland: Chełm, Rękoraj, Rozprza, Stare Skoszewy, Szydłów and Żarnowo.

The new information includes identification of defenses and other structures surrounding the forts such as walls and moats. Of primary interrest was the new findings for Chełm. "We think this was a bustling object, an important settlement centre, surrounded by numerous open settlements, recorded during the study of the Archaeological Image of Poland," said Dr Jerzy Sikora from the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Łódź.
